HIDDEN VALLEY BASKETWERKS
Charlotte A. Des Roches and Ulli Auer-Erdoes
Charlotte A. Des Roches and Ulli Auer-Erdoes are the creators of Hidden Valley
Basketwerks.
Charlotte is a self-taught, award winning basket weaver with thirty years of
experience. Living in the northeast part of the country, she ran her own basket
shop, Baskets & More, taught classes and filled special orders, including one
purchased by Caroline Kennedy for her Uncle Ted's wedding gift. She closed her
shop when she moved to New Mexico and turned to peyote stitch bead work and
created one-of-a-kind jewelry and hat bands. When Ulli asked Charlotte to teach
her how to make baskets, Charlotte rediscovered her fascination with the
process.
Ulli, who was born in Germany and has been living in the United States for more
than half of her life, has spent many years as a painter and plasterer and has
worked on the sets of many of the movies made in New Mexico. When she asked
Charlotte to teach her basket weaving, she had no idea it would lead to the
wonderful collaboration of talents seen in the Hidden Valley Basketwerks
collection. Ulli's vast knowledge of color and staining techniques has helped
create some wonderful new effects for the finishes on the baskets.
Charlotte and Ulli create a variety of unique, one of a kind baskets, as well as
some of the old style functional baskets. A selection of their baskets can be
seen at their
website.
