nicasio
romero and janet stein romero have lived and worked alongside the pecos
river for over thirty years and have been active in promoting the arts of the area.
nicasio
is a well known new mexico sculptor whose work has been featured in smithsonian and
sculpture magazines. he builds his pieces out of rock, adobe, bamboo, willow, and other
materials he gathers locally. his earth-tech approach incorporates organic forms and
interactive features. his "torreon" (tower) piece is a landmark sculpture built out of
adobes fired in a wood kiln. "caracol" is a circular nautilus-like piece of adobe with
acequia (irrigation ditch) water guided through it. he works on a large scale with a strong
connection and interaction with nature. nature and earth are his muses.
janetıs work reflects a style described as fantasy realism. you enter the realm of the
artistıs world, seeing her fascination with the mysteries of trance and its connection with
dance. images of women in pairs, or alone, or within an interior jungle of the mind are
reflected in her work. she works in a variety of media: painted collage, watercolors, large
acrylic paintings, monotypes, and hand-painted tiles and platters. Her work has been
featured in the santa fe new mexican and el palacio magazine.
nicasio and janet founded and curate the el ancon outdoor sculpture garden and
gallery and have organized the annual el ancon show for the past seventeen years, show
casing their own work and the work of many new mexico artists. they have both been
active in the artesanos del valle tour since its inception.
